(Written as an American long-haul e-bike rider)
After hundreds of miles of cross-state and weekend touring on my e-bike, these are the non-negotiable essentials I bring on every long ride. No fancy gadgets—just reliable, road-proven gear.

1. Spare Battery & Portable Charger
My range drops fast on hills and headwinds. I always carry a full spare battery or a compact fast charger. Nothing kills a tour faster than being stranded miles from home with a dead motor.
2. Repair Kit + Patch Kit + Mini Pump
Flat tires happen. I pack:
- Tire levers
- Patch kit or spare inner tube
- Mini pump or CO2 inflator
- Multi-tool with Allen wrenches
No bike shop in remote areas = self-reliance is mandatory.
3. Hydration Backpack or Large Water Bottle
In the US sun, dehydration hits quick. I use a 2L hydration pack. On hot days, I also add electrolytes.
4. Sun & Weather Protection
- Sunscreen & lip balm
- UV-protective long sleeves
- Lightweight rain jacket (windproof, not bulky)
Weather changes fast on open roads.
5. Bright Front & Rear Lights
Even in daylight, cars miss e-bikes. I run lights all day for visibility, especially on rural highways.
6. Phone Mount + Power Bank
GPS navigation is essential for backroads. A secure mount and power bank keep my phone alive for maps and emergencies.
7. Basic First-Aid Kit
Band-aids, antiseptic, pain relievers, and gauze. For scrapes, sore muscles, or small accidents on remote trails.
8. High-Visibility Vest or Reflective Gear
Drivers in the US aren’t always looking for bikes. Being seen = being safe.
9. Lightweight Lock
For quick stops at cafes, rest areas, or stores. A compact folding lock keeps my e-bike secure without weighing me down.
10. Snacks & Energy Bars
Long rides burn calories. I bring nuts, protein bars, and dried fruit—no junk, just steady energy.
If you’re riding a WholeBikes e-bike for long distances, this setup keeps you comfortable, safe, and moving all day.
