The torque sensor on a mountain e-bike measures the force you apply to the pedals. When you start pedaling, it detects the amount of rotational force (torque) you're exerting. Based on this measurement, it sends a signal to the motor controller, which then adjusts the level of motor assistance accordingly. For example, if you pedal harder, the sensor detects the increased torque and the motor provides more power to help you tackle steep inclines or rough terrain more easily.
The torque sensor can actually help improve battery life. Because the motor assistance is precisely matched to your pedaling effort, it avoids wasting energy by providing excessive power when it's not needed. For example, when you're coasting or pedaling lightly on a flat section, the motor provides minimal assistance, conserving battery power. This efficient use of energy means you can ride for longer distances on a single charge compared to a system that doesn't adjust power as intelligently.
Regular maintenance of the torque sensor is relatively simple. Keep the area around the sensor clean and free of dirt, mud, and debris, as these can interfere with its operation. Also, check the sensor's connections periodically to ensure they are secure.
